Welcome to Hawthorne Asylum, a unique culinary haven nestled at 1080 SE Madison St, Portland, OR. This dynamic food court, located on the fascinating grounds of a former insane asylum, has quickly become a local favorite for its remarkable variety of flavors and an eclectic ambiance. It's not just a place to eat; it’s an experience waiting to unfold.
As you wander through the vibrant space, you're greeted by an array of food trucks offering everything from mouthwatering Philly cheesesteaks to indulging waffle sandwiches. One of my personal favorites is the El Filette, a delicious skirt steak sandwich loaded with cassage slaw and chipotle mayo—a culinary delight for just $12.00. If you're in the mood for something hearty, the Dr Philly Cheese Steak, paired with crispy fries at $7.99, won't disappoint.
The atmosphere at Hawthorne Asylum is invigorating. Every visit feels fresh and lively, with a clientele ranging from diverse hipsters to casual diners just seeking comfort food. It’s a spot where you can grab a quick bite with friends or cozy up by the fire pits during those chilly Portland nights. As customer Trevor Tolva noted, the vibe shifts throughout the day, capturing the essence of what makes Portland, well, Portland.

Be it a cold rainy evening or a sunny day, the covered and heated spaces ensure comfort while you savor your pad Thai burrito or share a plate of perfectly fried artichoke hearts.
In conclusion, if you are on the hunt for a vibrant food destination that offers delightful dishes, a welcoming atmosphere, and a slice of Portland’s rich history, look no further than Hawthorne Asylum. So many awesome choices and right where an old insane asylum used to be. What's not to love? Some of the patrons. The vibe can go from diverse to bro boy to hipster central in the span of an hour so choose quickly and wisely depending on what you're into and grab a seat quick. The little bar area can get pretty busy so get order the food, find your spot, and get in line for the drinks. I great spot to stop off with friends for a sobering bite. One of the best pods in the city by far.
First time visit but won’t be our last. We’ve been eyeing this place for years as we’ve driven by and finally made it and WOW we love this place. Any indulgence you can imagine is likely available here. There’s several covered areas so don’t worry, even if it’s raining. There are fire pits for chilly days. There’s even a taphouse that has a covered area that you can hang out at. Food from all over the world and every Thing you could really ever want from cheesy noodles to seafood and Korean as well as waffle sandwiches. Hello we are going to be back. We tried the Philly cheesesteaks the mac & cheese and seafood places, as well as the brew pub when we went there this visit. We sat by the fire pits. Gives a communal vibe, plenty of eye candy to check out the urban art.
Great place. Lots of seating available. There are a variety of food trucks to choose from. There is a Cider and beer Cart so you can enjoy a cold beverage while waiting in the lines. I attended the Grand Opening of the Montage Food Truck. There was a line (as to be expected). Friendly service, hot tasty dishes to choose from. So glad they took this opportunity to open a food truck and continue serving there staple dishes.. fried artichoke hearts were delicious.and the alligator jambalaya had just enough spice to tantalize the tongue and taste buds. I also got the shrimp po-boy which had just enough shrimp for every bite from end-to-end. Would definitely come back to the asylum to try other food carts and delicious food.
Great variety of food trucks along with a bar/alcohol truck with awesome beer and wine selection. We came on a cold rainy evening, but they have great covered areas with heating overhead lamps. They also have portable toilet and hand washing area, convenient! Stayed nice and cozy in the rain while grubbing on a waffle sammich, pad Thai burrito with a sour beer! Can’t wait to go back!
Hawthorne Asylum is always a fun and interesting place to eat - there's a really good variety of food options, tons of seating, and the atmosphere is great! If you've got guests visiting from out of town, I'd especially recommend bringing them around! It tends to cost a bit more to eat there, but nothing too crazy. The wide variety of food carts means that it's an excellent spot to bring larger groups without having to figure out what, exactly, everyone is in the mood for. Some food carts deliver through apps, but even just seeing the place would be worth a visit, so come by!
What a beautiful food cart lot! I LOVED the industrial haunted asylum feel! And the tables and seating is beautifully crafted. We went for the Waffle Breakfast Sandwich. They were amazing. But we should of just ordered one and shared it because they are so big. It was a beautiful experience with great art.
I didn’t know the best way to review this cart pod because there are so many different variables but I figured I’d just review it a one space. We really liked the variety of carts available. In the end we order from 4 different spaces in addition to the beer/wine place. We loved the big fire pits because it made it nice to sit outside even with not so amazing weather. You should check them out sometime. My favorite was montage cart. Used to love going to brick and mortar back in the day.
Definitely my top 3 fav food truck park in Portland. So many selections of various cuisines, Russian, Mexican, Japanese, etc. The whole area was very clean and organized. The seating area was large and under shades.
